Takako Saito è un’artista contemporanea che ha creato opere capaci di coinvolgere il pubblico attraverso l’espressione libera e lo spirito del gioco. Le sue radici creative affondano nel movimento educativo artistico giapponese del dopoguerra, noto come Movimento per l’Educazione Artistica Creativa, e nelle sue attività sperimentali all’interno del movimento d’avanguardia internazionale Fluxus. Attualmente residente in Germania, Saito presenterà la sua prima retrospettiva in Giappone nella sua città natale, Sabae, nella prefettura di Fukui.
La mostra presenta circa 300 opere che coprono quasi 70 anni di attività artistica. Giochi con scacchi e cubi, performance e installazioni: le sue espressioni piene di sperimentazione e gioco stimolano la creatività e l’immaginazione di chi le vive e vi partecipa. Bambini e adulti potranno scoprire il piacere dell’arte e lasciarsi trasportare in un mondo di espressione libera. Un’esperienza curiosa e divertente vi aspetta!

Takako Saito: The Playful Museum
Japan’s First Retrospective of the World-Renowned Artist Yoko Saito!
Curated by Hiroko Inoue, Manabe-no-Yakata Museum, Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan.
August 9 – October 12, 2025.
Takako Saito is a contemporary artist whose works invite audiences into her imaginative world through the spirit of play and free expression. Her creative roots lie in the postwar Japanese art education movement known as the Creative Art Education Movement, and her experimental activities within the international avant-garde movement Fluxus. Now based in Germany, Saito will hold her first-ever retrospective in Japan, in her hometown of Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture.
This exhibition showcases approximately 300 works spanning nearly 70 years of artistic practice. From chess and cube-based games to performances and installations, her playful and experimental expressions awaken creativity and imagination in those who experience and participate in them. Both children and adults are invited to discover the joy of art and immerse themselves in a world of free expression. Come and enjoy this curious and delightful space.

- Born in 1929 in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture
- Studied child psychology at Japan Women’s University (1947–1950)
- Worked as a teacher at Chuo Junior High School (1951–1954)
- Joined the Creative Art Education Movement founded by Takijiro Kubo in 1952
- Moved to the United States in 1963
- Participated in the Fluxus movement under George Maciunas in 1964
- Later lived and worked in France, the UK, and Italy; currently based in Düsseldorf, Germany
